Dickens’
Festival
We have, in our area, a fun festival called
the Dickens’ Festival from Charles Dickens’ novel - The Christmas
Carol. Little stores are decorated at the state fairgrounds to look like
Victorian London. All the vendors dress up like Dickens’ characters and
even adopt the accent. There are carriage rides, fish and chips to eat,
open fires to warm your hands at. You can eat roasted chestnuts and then
our favorite is Father Christmas. Each time we have a new baby we return
to the Dickens’ festival because we have to update our photo with Father
Christmas with the new baby. On our wall we have framed the most memorable
photographs. The first year we attended the Dickens’ Festival, Joseph
was 6 weeks old and in the photograph you can see clearly the cords for
his Apnea monitor. In last year’s photo, no one is looking at the
camera. Miriam is holding a gooey candy cane, Father Christmas was trying
to appease her, Caleb has his bottom lip sticking out, as he enters his
stranger-anxiety phase and the rest of the children look at though, given
the opportunity, they would rather run and hide. This years’ is sweet,
Caleb has the appeasement candy cane and the children all look as though
they have finally got it down...I love tradition!
