| Miriam's Dandelion
by Bernadine Sevy
A
date with Miriam is always eye-opening.
Our 6th child, and third daughter, accompanied me
on a date tonight. We
went to Cold Stone Creamery and picked out our ice-creams.
It was fun watching her decide, flavor had nothing to do with
it, she went for color, green with gummy bears.
I cringed, Mint ice-cream with gummy bears sounded
disgusting but Miriam squealed with delight, the gummy bears were
“cute”, so “teeny tiny”.
I love her sense of wonder.
She
can talk the hind end off a donkey and her favorite game is “I
spy”. After we’d
played “I spy” for a half hour or so, I decided to try and
divert her. This is how
the conversation went:
Me : Miriam, if you could wish for any one thing in the world,
what would it be?
Without
hesitation she answered.
Miri : A baby sister.
Me : What if you got a baby brother instead?
Miri : Mom! I love David and
Jacob and Joseph and Caleb but he pulls my hair.
Me : Honey, baby girls pull hair too.
Miri : Not like brothers, they pull out huge bunches.
Me : Heavenly Father sends us what baby he thinks that we should
have.
Miri : (gesticulating) Mom! Mom!
Listen! All you
have to do is go in the orchard and blow on a white thing.
You know those white things.
We
went back and forth on this for awhile, because I had no idea what
white thing she was talking about.
Then this slow mother finally got it...
Me : Oh , you mean a dandelion!
Miri : Yes, a dandelion. You
have to blow on it and it will come true.
Miriam
is constantly bringing me dandelions to blow on, now I know why..
She wishes and I blow and kaboom...we have a baby.
Miriam had some more advice.
Miri : And then Mom you have to stay away from Dad, or he will mess it up.
Me : How’s that?
Miri : You remember before when you were going to have a girl baby, well
Dad did it..
Me : Did what?
Miri : I don’t know what he did but he did it and he changed it to a
boy. I want a
girl baby.
So
precious and precocious and hilarious.
A
few weeks ago she announced to me that I either had to have a baby
girl or adopt one. She
insists that I already have a tiny baby in my ball.
What ball? I
ask.
“You
know! When you eat lots
of different color seeds you grow a ball in your tummy and then a
baby can grow in there. The
ball is the same color as the seeds you eat.”
When
we got home, she ran to her dresser and returned with lavender
footed pajamas, about 12 month size.
“See I have these for our baby girl.
I’m all ready.”
Johanna,
our fourteen year old walked by as I grimaced, “I feel sorry for
you Mom!”
The
truth is that Jim and I have been talking about having our next baby
and maybe Miriam knows something that we don’t yet know.
If she is half as adorable and as deep a thinker as Miriam
then we will be happy. Chances
are, and with Miriam’s influence, we ain’t seen nothing yet!
