Make Practicing Fun!
Carol Sevy
I have been practicing
music with my children for the last 13 years. My older children
say that I am a lot more fun now than I was when I started. So
here are some ideas to help make practice fun! (For children starting at age
three.)
1. Items needed: Dice and cheerios in a cup
Child rolls dice, they count out the number of cheerios that the
dice rolled. Then do something from the lesson. Then eat the
cheerios. The younger the child the bigger the reward for each
small step.
2. Item needed: Clothes pin
Take turns hiding and finding the clothes pin. After you find the
clothes pin, do something from the lesson.
3. Item needed: Happy parent
Take turns clapping songs and guessing what song they are going to
play.
4. Item needed
After every assignment the child blows bubbles. After practice the
child gets the bottle of bubbles and plays with them while he
listens to recorded music.
5. Item needed: Energetic parent
After each assignment together you do 5 jumping jacks, sit ups,
stretches, arm circles, run in place etc.
6. Items needed: Container with notes of assignments
Take out a note and do what it says until all the notes are gone.
Make sure some of the notes are fun and easy stuff like: give Mom
a hug, get a drink, roll on the floor 5 times etc.
7. Items needed: 5 - 10 small toys
Put toys on table and as the assignments are finished they jump
onto the floor.
8. Items needed: Small toy and masking tape
Line up tape like this: START l l l l l l l l END. The toy starts
on the first line and with each assignment the toy progresses.
When the toy gets to the end, you are done.
9. Items needed: Paper shapes, such as eggs for Easter, flowers,
shapes etc.
Write the assignment on the back of each shape. Play musical
chairs with the shapes. This is a favorite.
10. Instead of saying “Let’s practice” say “Let’s go and play a
game!”
