My Brave New World
By Bernadine Sevy
I am up in the tops of the mountains with my children.
I have a Hummingbird feeder hanging near my hammock and no one can
reach me on the phone or at my door.
It’s not that people don’t know I’m here because if it were
an emergency they could come and get me, but rather that they have to take
care of it themselves or let it wear out.
Hopefully when I get back to civilization my regulars will realize
that they got on without me for quite awhile and don’t really “need”
me after all. I have a pile
of books I have been intending to read, a bunch of fun woodsy school stuff
to do with the kids, my laptop and most importantly lots of food.
This morning we had an incredibly healthy breakfast, hot chocolate
with marshmallows and double stuff Oreos.
We
have a hike around the lake planned and 4 or 5 Beaver dams to examine.
We have examined dung beetles, spied on moose and deer and watched
dozens of Hummingbirds. There
is nothing as wonderful as hearing the elk call in the middle of the night
and waking to the singing and twittering of hundreds of birds.
It rained all night and I listened to the rain soak everything and
thought how refreshing it smelled, wet sage, pine and juniper. Even the dirt smells like heaven. It did take forever to get a fire started because the wood
for the fire got a good soaking too.
It was chilly last night but it forced me to cuddle the two babies
tighter and I didn’t sleep very well because I couldn’t roll from side
to side but I did get to listen to the night sounds and my sons snoring in
the next tent.
Jim
comes up in the mornings or evenings , generally to bring something I’ve
forgotten but I like to think he’s missing me a little too.
He’ll join us on Friday evening and I can’t wait to have him
come up and feel the thrills I feel.
So
if you need an escape, try the back woods, the children will unwind and so
will you. Take time to smell
the roses, I mean the pine and enjoy the peace and quiet, the world will
survive without you, and you will feel better about the world too.
