Organizing Tips for the Large Family

I don’t like new years resolutions. I don’t even make any! But I always seem to "promise" to organize my house a little better, make more time to do fun things, spend more time doing things with my children etc. Surely, I could be so organized that all I would have to do is spend a few minutes each day "maintaining". Well, I learned that I could make my life a lot more bearable but since my family hasn’t learned to do EXACTLY as they’re told my house isn’t perfect. Here are some tips for organizing your above average family!  FULL STORY

Befriending the Laundry Monster
I decided to spring clean the children’s rooms.......
I ended up with 40 loads of laundry, this is embarrassing because it says a lot about my house keeping skills.  I hauled it all down to the Laundromat, used 20 washers and 20 driers and had it done in 2 hours.  Then I hauled it all home and had the children separate it into their own piles.  One at a time I had them bring down their clothes and some of them hated what I did next.

Affordable Storage Ideas
There are really only 3 main things to remember when you are trying to organize and store items in your home.

  1. ELIMINATE If you have not used it in a year - get rid of it! Don't hold onto household items with the idea that you will use it "someday".
  2. LABEL Find a specific place for everything. Label boxes, shelves, doors or containers so that everyone in the household knows what goes where.
  3. GROUP Cluster things that are similar and are most likely to be used together. For example store the baking items in a cupboard for baking, lightbulbs near the stepstool, etc.

Conquering Kids Clutter
Spring is here, and with it comes the urge for to clean, de
-clutter, and toss out. Until the next year, when we start all over again. For some reason, after the holidays and again in the springtime, I find myself drawn to minimalist decorating. You know the style: no knick-knacks, a few things hung on the walls, throw out all the kids' toys... Ok, that is a bit drastic. But with a preschooler's Hot Wheels taking over my living room, I'm getting ready to regroup. Perhaps a few of these organizing tips will help you in your quest to conquer clutter in kids' rooms. Spring Cleaning a la Testosterone
Do men just play dumb when it comes to cleaning? Is this an obvious attempt to avoid any sort of housework? I used to think so, but now I think it may have something to do with a testosterone brain block or something.

Be Prepared
One of the things that will afford a family the opportunity to grow is a feeling of security. One way for your family to have this feeling is to be prepared for emergencies by having a plan that everyone in the family has discussed and has had a part in creating. Our family lives along the Wasatch Front in Utah and we have been hearing quite a bit about the big earthquake that "is" coming our way. Because of this talk, what the kids have been learning in school and our desire to be safe, we have come up with a plan.  FULL STORY

Meal Planning Made Easy
It's no fun trying to decide what to make for dinner every night. Planning your meals ahead of time often saves you time as well as money.

There are many different ways to plan your meals. How you plan yours depends on how much time you want to spend now to save yourself time later.

I plan my meals once a week. Because I have limited refrigerator/freezer space and a small family to feed (3), this plan seems to work best for me. I only go to the grocery store once a week. When I'm getting ready to go to the store, I sit down and starting planning my menu for the next week. FULL STORY

Out of the
Mouths of Babes

Our 4-year old daughter has made a new friend at preschool this year. She calls him her "boyfriend". When I asked her what his name was, she answered my question with the usual mispronunciation of a 4-year-old, and said "Heaven". I made an assumption that she meant to say "Kevin".

For the next couple of days I told my husband about "Kevin" (aka Heaven). When my husband took our daughter to preschool, he was introduced to Kevin, but was quickly corrected. His true name is "Evan". So you see I wasn't that far off with "Heaven".

When our son Devin was about three years old, he requested his usual afternoon snack of a graham cracker.  As I handed him one, he held up two chubby fingers and said "May I have two crackers Mama?"  As I told him that one was enough, he thoughtfully took a bite of cracker, munched it carefully and said "Mama, I think my graham cracker needs a friend".
